Default DS2 Demo Review

DS2 is to be released soon. I decided to try the demo.

It's about a 1500 Mb DL and install, and it's worth it. I have yet to finish it after many hours of playing.

This game has potential, that's all I can really say. Someone who has tried it please comment.

This and F.E.A.R. are my next two game purchases until the Guild Wars Expansion comes out.

Later

More of the same is what I've heard from a friend, graphics are improved but still look a bit dated with a fuzzyness of textures between zoom levels.... not tempted myself.

F.E.A.R - tried this on the weekend, nice touches and seems promising, altho I like my shooters faster paced.

DS2 is Dungeon Siege 2. DS:Legends of Aranna is the game before it in the series. It's VERY similar to Diablo 2, made by Microsoft.

Yes, BF2 is an extreamly well made game. If anyone is interested in tanks, copters, jeeps, hummers, APCs (that float on water like a boat as well), boats, heavy lift transport, infantry copters, tons of weapons and military kits, then you will probley enjoy this game.

Its learning curve isn't too bad if you've played previous FPS games, infact you will probley hit it right off. It reminds me of Americas Army with vechiles, and a lot larger levels and well, near close infinate lives.

They have a nice in game tab to keep track of your stats, medals, and ribbins you have been award, kills / deaths with weapons and kits you use the most, pretty well anything possible it will look after.

At the site www.bf2tracker.com you can check out your stats and show them off to other players as well since they come with an option to let you post your stats as a signature, example:

(Background I created, I've created ones like that for years, so don't give me "Its another one of those?", I started it! And the text on the picture might show up white apparently if your using FF.)

Problem right now is that EA has shut down sites from quearing them to update these stats, but it should be back online and running in another week or so. Should be interesting to see whos taken the lead in what, etc etc, when they finally do.

Overall, excellent game. =) (And I suggest not playing as a Sniper, they can be rather useless sometimes. [That coming from one who often finds himself being chased by vechiles or other type of large metal objects.] w00t, I've almost broken 1K kills with the sniper rifle! Too bad stats aren't updating yet. Grrr.) At least my stats are improving, haven't played an FPS in probley a year. Should be nice and high in another month or so, with my 14-2 K/D ratio. =)

I dunno. I heard that it sucks, has bugs, some people can't even play, and EA is doing nothing about it.

And this is coming from several sources.

Theres 700 some off thousand players. The clan I am hanging around with hasn't had any problem. And theres no bugs that I've seen yet in the game. However I hate the hopping / jumping and some other odd unbelievable things... Need to fix the 'jump and lay down' problem, not that many do it, just seems strange for a person to run at you, jump into the air, then suddenly adjust themselves so they are laying down in the air at the peak of their height then falls to the ground. =\

I know the game pretty well runs on Windows XP only, and I'm not sure on the system requirements, stopped looking at them when I built my new baby a number of months ago.

Well I just finished the DS2 demo and I must say

I'm impressed.

They've made a ton of great changes. Some of the old problems are still there (not being able to zoom out far enough, making the ground right up in your face and unable to see what's going on sometimes. The character panels taking up a large portion fo the screen, stuff like that).

But they've made a ton of great changes too. Looking forward to it.

Interface is clumsy, movement limited by mouse even clumsier, poor early warning system of attackers, terribly narrow screen area. And it doesn't look like it has much replay value.

Needs a LOT of work. I don't think I will be purchasing it.

The quests are supposed to be a lot better (for an action-RPG) than before, pets, different experience system or something...but still fairly linear (SP game). Bunch of forum folk I know are playing and giving their impressions.
From them, it sounds like if you enjoyed DS1 fairly well, that DS2 is enough improvement to make it a possible purchase.
But if you didn't like DS1, I doubt DS2 will change anyone's mind - tho I think they're trying to gain more of a RPG audience than before.

I'm hoping the MP game will be better...the SP game/maps was never the highpoint of DS1, IMO....

I downloaded the demo, and I really liked it. I had just come from playing Guild Wars and there is a noticeable difference. It took me a little bit to stop trying to rotate my view with the right click pan option. It took me a bit to stop trying to use the AWSD keys to move around.

At first, when I started playing, I did not like the how confined you were on your path, compared to the openness of Guild Wars, but that didn't last long, because the terrain graphics are very nice. There is foilage! The enemies are camoflaged to hide in the foilage. The spears and arrows stay stuck in you for a while and the depending on how you kill an enemy, you get a different graphic. One time it might just fall over dead, the next it exploded in a million chunks, or just burned to a crisp.

Your character is utterly customizable, at the beginning it's like you are given a piece of clay and you can mold it to your wants and desires. You can focus on one profession or you can do two, three, or even all four. Though it is recommended to stick with max two, since you wouldn't reach full potential, unless you did a lot of level grinding.

Oh, and the drops are worthwhile too, enemy bosses drop good stuff, and not on an infrequent basis. I played a good portion this weekend, levelling up, and I have 2 pieces of 5 different armor sets! And with additional piece of armor, you get bonuses for having 2 or more pieces on.

I probably finished the demo in a few hours, but I continued playing, going through it again and again, because it was fun and when I fought enemies I continued to get stronger, my skills grew; magic, dexterity, strength, intelligence, all increase depending on what you do. You use magic, your intelligence increases while you use magic. If you shoot a bow your dexterity and ranged goes up.

Guild Wars may look pretty, but compared to DSII's character development system, GW is pretty basic. In GW you are limited by your class and attribute points, in DSII there is no such thing. You don't pick a class and get confined by it, you choose your class based on your character actions. Like said above, you tend to focus on one or two classes so that you are just a mediocre character. And with henchmen and pets, you get balance.

A new thing in DSII is pets. You can get a pet and have it part of your party, but your pet can also grow, by feeding your pet, it grows. And depending on what you feed it, you get different bonuses. If you feed it mostly potions, you'll get a health and mana bonus. If you feed it mostly spells, you can get an intelligence bonus once it reaches the next stage of development.

There is a sort of point distribution system, that augments your character when it levels up. If you are a spell caster and you level up, you can increase your mana pool by a percentage, or you increase your damage in a certain magic type. If you are a ranger, you increase your damage bows make, or how fast, or how far you shoot them. And as you increase your levels more special abilities become available to you.

So far the character development aspect is very good, customizable to the boot. The graphics may not be as sharp as GW, but you hardly notice when fighting or while you are having a good time. I attached a screenshot I took for a friend. I'm the one holding the nifty looking staff, with my ice elemental pet, and my archer/nature magic hench (henchmen are just as customizeable).
